INFO
The imposing octagonal church of S. Ercolano in PERUGIA (UMBRIA), was originally founded at the end of the thirteenth century on the site where Saint Herculanus was martyred by Totila’s Goths in 547. The upper part was torn down when Rocca Paolina was built. The double staircase on the facade with its slender pointed arches and a row of blind arcading under the upper cornice dates to 1607. The high altar rests on a late third-century Roman sarcophagus containing the earthly remains of the Saint.
